On the Road: Hawthornes

Upon arrival into Hawthorne's, we could tell it wasn't an ordinary establishment. Aside from copious amounts of beer to fulfill every beer connoisseur's dream as the restaurants focal point, the place felt comfortable and homey. A lit fire glowed from the stone fireplace. All the small tables were tightly placed, forcing you to deal with other patrons, but it was all okay because experience strayed from the average. The waitress resembled a sweeter Jenna Elfman(an actress, cause if ya don't know, now ya know ♬). A first for us was the deconstructed mimosa: a glass of orange juice with your own personal prosecco, a touch that, although cute, took away from the valuable real estate on the minuscule table. And just because we couldn't leave without at least sampling it, we ordered the Sweet Potato Casserole beer by Funky Buddha Brewing. This beer was something your crazy uncle would bring to a holiday party and convince you to try, unbeknownst to your parents. I hate to admit it but this was a pretty damn good beer. Too sweet to have several, but one was a great surprise.

We ordered breakfast food because, well, brunch, duh. Our final choices after perusing their hunger-inducing menu were a Drunken Waffle and a French Toast Funnel Cake.

A blueberry waffle topped with braised pulled pork, candied pecans and a side of bourbon maple syrup. There was a perfect balance of sweet and savory in this plate and the bourbon wasn't pronounced to the point of being an Irish waffle rather than just a drunken one.

Funnel cake alone is a solid choice for a breakfast; when you sandwich the funnel cake between french toast, it's game over for the competition. It was topped with creme de anglaise and fresh raspberries.
