Two Roads: Winter Classic

In a state full of small, craft breweries, it would be quite the shame if we didn't take advantage of all those breweries (and wineries!) have to offer. Of all those we have visited so far, Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford, CT has become our favorite spot to enjoy. Naturally, we jumped at the chance to partake in their first annual Winter Classic.

From live ice sculpting to a bonfire, Two Roads celebrated winter, or rather, the end of it, as it was over 50 degrees that day! Food trucks lined the sidewalk, bands played across the stage set up by the hop vines, and there was plenty of beer to be had.

Featured were three food trucks: Caseus Cheese Truck, Chief Brody's Banh Mi, and The Meat Truck Company, all from New Haven, CT. Parked on the other side of the brewery for the non-festival goers was The Green Grunion, from Danbury, CT.

After grabbing a beer--the Espressway Stout, to be specific--we headed over to Chief Brody's Banh Mi for our first bites of the day. For those unaware, banh mi refers to a sandwich that marries French and Vietnamese flavors into one delicious, hand-sized meal. There are both vegetarian and meat-filled options offered at Chief Brody's, but we opted for meat versions this time: Mike getting the pork while I got the chicken.

While packed full of flavor, these sandwiches were a little on the smaller side, and could stand to have a side of fries, chips or even a salad. I was delighted by the flavor of the barbeque chicken paired with the kimchi slaw and cilantro, made even better by the crispy baguette. Still, I had a little room to spare, so we moved onto the next truck...

Known for their brick-and-mortar location, Caseus has upped the mobile cheese game with their Cheese Truck. They keep their menu simple: gourmet grilled cheese and tomato soup, which bags of chips available for purchase as well. They have also become famous due to their 10-sandwich challenge previously attempted on the Man vs. Food Nation reality show.

I opted to add pickled red onions (my weakness) to their classic grilled cheese, and I never say no to mini pickles! The grainy mustard was something I have never experienced, and I can't say I'll jump at the chance to have it again. The sourdough bread was perfectly crisped, and their blend of swiss, gouda, comte, gruyere, and sharp cheddar makes the best cheesy combination. Maybe it's because their kitchens are small, but again I was slightly disappointed in the size of food for the price paid.

Overall, we had a great time at Two Roads' Winter Classic event, as we tend to do at all their events, and we can't wait for the next time we're there!
